What is the Process of Making an Insurance Claim?

Life can throw plenty of different curveballs at people including auto accidents, floods, fire, injury and many other problems that need to be solved. That is why life insurance is offered and the majority of people across the country have life insurance for themselves, their spouses and their children. Life insurance, homeowner’s insurance, auto insurance and health insurance help to defray the costs of medical bills, accident fees and help to protect a family’s assets during a natural disaster. The process for filing an insurance claim is different for each category.

Auto Insurance

-Telephone your insurance company and ask to be connected with the claims department. Most will take your details and fill out a claim form for you.
-They can go from taking your details, to arranging for an assessor to inspect the vehicle, in one phone call.
-If your insurance company has a website, there may be a 24-hour online claiming facility. The benefit of claiming online is that you can track the progress of your claim from beginning to end without getting stuck in a telephone hold system.
-If you are filling in forms or drawing a diagram of the accident scene, be accurate.
-An insurance assessor may need to inspect your car in order to come up with a quote to repair the damage.
-Depending on the details of your claim, your car insurance rate may be affected.
-Repair work will usually be carried out at a garage approved by the insurance company and they will pay the bill. However, you will have to pay the excess amount dictated by your policy.

Homeowner’s Insurance

-Report a crime on a house to the police or report damage to a house from a natural disaster to the insurance company.
-Document everything that was taken during a robbery and provide receipts of the stolen goods if possible. Also, document all damage that has been done to the house during a storm.
-Fill out all the necessary forms provided by the insurance company and return them as soon as possible.
-A claims adjuster will be sent by the insurance company to the location to inspect for product losses and for damage assessment.

Health Insurance

The difference with health insurance claims is that they are more common and occur more frequently than auto or homeowner’s claims. Health insurance claims are performed every single time a patient visits a doctor. The claim in this process is considered a bill. The patient visits the doctor, has services performed, and usually gives the office a co-pay. The co-pay is usually anywhere from $10-$30. The remainder of the fee is paid by the insurance company. The doctor’s office submits a claim to the insurance company, also known as a bill or an invoice, and then wait for payment. More than likely, the payment the insurance company sends to the doctor’s office is no more than $125 for services rendered. So, if a patient’s total bill is $125 and they pay a $15 co-pay, the insurance company will be sent a claim for $110.
